It is a common misconception that bed bugs are only active in the bedroom. Perhaps it is a common misnomer or it is due to the fact that many people do not understand bed bugs. A commonly misquoted fact about bed bugs is that they don’t stray more than about 20 feet (but sometimes up to 100 feet) from their source of food. While the source of food may be you in your bed, this could also include anywhere people are located for extended periods. It is not uncommon to find bedbugs in living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms.  
 
   
 

There are numerous places for bed bugs to hide outside the bedroom.  These locations include soft furniture (sofas, recliners, ect.), computer chairs, floor crevices, cabinets, light fixtures, and behind electrical socket plates.  Bed bugs prefer the dark, choosing their homes accordingly.  However, they must feed to survive. This means beg bugs would rather live close to food over exposing themselves to light.
   
 

Another often misunderstood fact about bed bugs is their nocturnal nature.  When bed bugs need to feed, they will adjust their dining schedule accordingly.  This is what makes bed bug infestations outside of the bedroom so common.  Particularly common infestation sites include high traffic sofas and computer chairs.  Furthermore, while bed bugs prefer sleeping targets for feeding, they will resort to biting you while you are still awake if they are hungry enough.
   
 

Protecting the rest of your home from bed bugs is a matter of preventing the spread of contaminated items. The most common case of cross-room contamination occurs when victims of bed bugs switch to sleeping on the sofa or spare bedrooms.  During the process you might actually bring or attract bed bugs to the new location, spreading the infestation and making it harder to fight.  The more concentrated the infestation, the easier it is for pest control professionals to fight, and the faster you will be bed bug free.
