Summer
Pest
Control
Advice |
|

 |
|
As the weather heats up in Ontario summer pests come out with a vengeance. Over the summer months there will be an increase in activity with most insects and animals (most notably: ants, carpenter ants, flies, spiders, earwigs and mosquitoes. Keep an eye out for heavy ant trails around the walls, driveways, windows, fences, and throughout the yard. Interior activity will probably be around the kitchen and bathrooms, or near any possible water source.
With an overly wet summer it can be easy to loose control of foliage growth. As plants grow out and touch the side of your house ants are able to use the tree limbs as a bridge to your home. Trimming new tree limbs and foliage away from the house will help decrease the chance of these pests getting inside.
|
Outside lighting is another factor. Insects are attracted to bright white lights so we recommend using standard yellow lighting. Keep pet dishes inside and trash away from the house so you don’t draw ants, rodents, or other wildlife toward the home. Yard debris should be bagged and taken away from the property to decrease harborage areas for insects.
Checking your home and yard is key to maintaining a pest free environment, and Nimby Pest Management performs a thorough pest inspection during every visit. |

Spiders

Spiders
While Ontario is home to a
large variety of arachnoids (spiders) the
large majority do not pose health risks to
humans. The two most worrisome are the
the Brown Recluse (at right) and the Black
Widow. Yes, that's right, the Black
Widow is common to Ontario.
The female Black Widow has a
shiny black, globular abdomen with two
yellow or red markings in a triangle shape.
It looks like a hourglass. Males are
smaller, lighter in color, with light
streaks on the abdomen. The web is
irregular, many times found along exterior
foundations on slabs, under stones and
rocks, behind shrubs . They will bite if
provoked. The bite feels like a sharp pain
,like a needle puncture. After 15 minutes to
an hour there will be muscular cramps. Bites
are rarely fatal, but you should seek
medical attention.
The Brown Recluse has a body
that is yellow to dark brown and is usually
2 to 4 cm long. Combined with the legs it
could be about 6 cm or longer in diameter .
The dorsal has a dark brown violin shaped
marking, very distinctive. Their web is off
white to Grey . They can be found
outside, under rocks, debris, wood piles,
etc. ,but many times are found inside. They
can be found in storage areas like closets,
basements, attics, garages and cellars.
Sometimes they can be around above the
ceiling duct work or register. Many times
people get bit by putting their hands or
feet in something that has been in storage.
The initial bite is not intense, but
poisonous. After 8-12 hours, the pain is
more intense, and over the next few days
large sores form leaving a disfiguring scar.
You should seek immediate medical treatment
after the bite.
It is highly recommended that
you seek professional assistance from a
NIMBY
Pest Management Professional when
ridding yourself of these insects.

Earwigs

|
|
Earwigs
are
easily
recognizable
by
their
pincers
(forceps
harmless
to
humans)
at
the
ends
of
their
abdomen.
They
are
dark
reddish-brown,
with
light
brown
legs,
and
are
about
5/8
inch
long.
In a
season,
females
reproduce
up
to
20-60
eggs
laid
in
burrows
(called
chambers),
2 to
3
inches
beneath
the
soil.
Most
species
have
one
generation
a
year,
over-wintering
in
the
soil.
Both
adults
and
the
young
require
moisture
to
live.
Removing earwig habitats is
very important to the control of all
insects, including earwigs.
As they are attracted to lights, it might
help to reduce some of the lighting outside
at night.
Most insecticide treatment should be done
outside with application around the building
foundation, flower beds, mulch areas and
turf within a couple of yards of the
building, as well as in the crawl space
areas of the home.

Sow
Bugs
/
Pillbugs

|
|
Sow Bugs / Pillbugs
Pillbugs (Armadillidium
vulgare)are commonly found in home gardens
across the Canada. Also known as
sowbugs (Porcellio scaber) pillbugs
will feed primarily on decaying matter and
are important in the decomposition process.
However, if present in large numbers, they
have been known to feed on seedlings, new
roots, lower leaves, and fruits or
vegetables laying directly on the soil. This
is where problems develop and a
NIMBY Pest
Management Professional may be
required.
These small scavengers scurry
when disturbed and are often found outside
hiding under leaves, rocks, garden debris,
mulch and other dark, damp areas.
Occasionally they will enter homes as
accidental invaders. Indoors they are
usually just a nuisance as they cannot
survive for more than a day or two without
water.

Mosquitoes
 |
|
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are most active
during the early hours of the morning and
early hours of the evening (usually right
around dusk.) While one or two
bites over the course of an evening is quite
common, the concern should arise when an
individual is being bitten more than 5 times
an hour. This could be a good sign
that a mosquito breeding ground is nearby.
